Individual Psychotherapy

How Individual Psychotherapy Works

The purpose of my work is to decrease your suffering while helping you fulfill your unique potential as an individual. To help you achieve that, I will give you constructive feedback during our time together. My years of psychotherapy training have equipped me with various skills and resourceful approaches to guide you through the therapeutic process.

For example, one skill is my ability to understand many self destructive and counterproductive patterns (often unconscious) that you may fall into. Other skills that I offer are my use of constructive questions to build your self awareness, and knowing when to be a bit firm and nudge you into greater discovery, and when to be more gentle instead.

Unlike many therapists (not all) in Toronto, I believe that examining your past is often a very helpful part of effective therapy. However, examining the past for the sake of the past is a waste of time, because the past is past and cannot be undone. Instead, the usefulness of the examining your past lies in that it enables us to understand why you are doing things today that may be causing you problems. Bringing this to light in sessions, combined with my interactive approach, can help you change your perceptions and reactions to people and situations.  This can work wonders. It will result in your learning how to "get out of your own way" and live in today's reality in a more adaptive and healthier manner.
